Parents and caregivers, especially those with children that have autism or other special needs or developmental delays, often find themselves challenged by the behaviors of the children. ACT is a method for connecting behaviors and values in a practical manner. Behavior science (ABA) has revealed that these behaviors are driven by many factors, some observable, and some unobservable. This workshop expands the understanding of these factors and how parents/caregivers can manipulate the environment to shape preferred behavior outcomes.

Participants will :

  • Learn what ACT and ABA are at a fundamental level

  • Participate in activities that demonstrate the principles of ACT and ABA in a practical manner from a parent/caregiver standpoint

  • Gain an understanding of why behaviors occur, why they persist or desist, and how to shape them

  • Engage with others in the workshop through activities and conversations which build a sense of community and support for parents/caregivers facing challenges

  • Develop a strategy for inculcating a values-based set of behaviors within the self and the child and for optimizing negotiation of aversive or intolerable situations
